World-renowned master-blaster batsman Sachin Tendulkar says, “Concentration has a lion’s share in my success. When I bat, I am fully focussed on the bowler and the ball in his hand. I see neither the umpire, runner nor anyone else in front of me.” P. Gopichand is India’s world-famous batminton player. He regularly practises ‘meditation’. In one of his interviews, he said, “Meditation helps me to keep my mind steady and to achieve success while playing.” Many such examples can be quoted.

In short, ‘success’ and ‘concentration’ are intimately linked. Almost in all the fields like arts, sports, education, science & technology, trade & business, politics, war, spirituality, meditation, etc., concentrated efforts are necessary. In this way, the importance of concentration is all-pervading.

But, whenever the topic of concentration or meditation arises, many complain that ‘our mind doesn’t concentrate’, ‘thoughts crowd in the mind’, etc. Thus, while knowing how to concentrate our oscillating mind, and thereby achieving peace through it, let’s first define concentration.

Concentration can be defined in 2 ways - 1] The capacity to completely focus on the thing we need, while simultaneously ignoring all other things, is called concentration. 2] Concentration means, the capability to steady our emotional and intellectual energy, on our objectives / goals, for a required time.

But, there is a fundamental difference between ‘concentration’ and ‘meditation’. The difference is of ‘purpose’. Normally, concentration is a useful process to achieve success in day-to-day life. Whereas, meditation is a more subtle process of exploring and ultimately purifying our mind.
